Crumb Cake
Mix flour, sugar, spices and salt together. Cut in shortening until mix resembles coarse crumbs. Remove 1/2 cup for topping. Beat egg, add molasses, sour milk and baking soda, mix well. Pour egg mix into flour mix and beat well. Pour into a greased 8 x 8 pan and sprinkle reserved flour mix over top. Bake at 350 for 35minutes or until done, testing with a toothpick.
This cake is an old family recipe, well over 50 years. Easy and quick,it has it's own topping, finished out of the oven. Most people do not keep soured milk around these days, to make put atablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice ina cup measure and fill to cup mark withsweet milk, let stand for five minutes.
