Cakes and Frostings

Basic Chocolate Cake

  • 2 cups Flour, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 1/3 cups Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Margarine
  • 2 Eggs
  • 3 ounces Unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon Almond extract
  • Sift together dry ingredients except sugar and set aside. Place sugar and shortening in mixer bowl. Attach beaters and mix at medium speed until creamy. Addeggs and mix for 2 minutes longer. Addmelted chocolate. Combine liquid, vanilla, and almond extract; and add alternately with dry ingredients, mixing well after each addition. Pour batter into 2 greased and floured cake pans. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 25 minutes. Remove from pans and allow to cool thoroughly before frosting.
